Course Selection “Cheat Sheet”
Students and Parents: Please use the following information to help in selecting courses for the 2016-2017 school year.
*NOTE: All students will register for REGULAR courses – Honors courses are not available for any student to pre-register for. Placement into Honors courses will be based on teacher recommendation, historical grades and administrative approval. Students and parents will be notified if the student is placed into one or more Honors/AP courses.
English Classes: Have students choose their English class first – current 9th graders should choose English II, current 10th graders should choose English III, current 11th graders should choose English IV. If a student failed English in the fall semester, they will need to register for 2 English courses – the one they previously failed AND the one that they should be in.
Math Classes: If students took Math I, they will move on to Math II, etc. Essentials of College Math is the 4th math requirement for students. This course is for students who historically struggle with math. AFM (Advanced Functions and Modeling) is another 4th math requirement, but is for students who typically perform well in math. Pre-Cal Honors could potentially be checked by students, but this course will follow the honors requirement listed in bullet #1. If a student signs up for Pre-Cal Honors and does not meet the requirements, then they will be placed into AFM.
**Note: If you have a senior who has already completed their 4 math requirements (took Math I in 8th grade or have doubled up in math during their 9th, 10th 0r 11th grade years), they do not have to sign up for another math. However, if they are planning to attend a 4-year college or university, public or private, it is recommended that they take a math course during their senior year. An option available to them is the LCC math course that will be taught on SL’s campus by a professor from LCC. The latter option requires students to take the placement test or have qualifying scores otherwise – See Mrs. Vickory or Mrs. Tyndall for more information.**
Science Courses: Students only need 3 science courses to graduate – Earth Science, Biology, Physical Science OR Chemistry. Typically, freshman take Earth Science, sophomores take Biology and juniors take Physical Science OR Chemistry, but this is not always the case as students may have transferred from other schools, counties or states; or students have doubled up on their science classes in order take higher level science courses.
*Note: Students should take EITHER Physical Science or Chemistry- they do NOT have to take both.
History Courses: All students now require 4 History courses to graduate. Typically, 9th graders take World History, 10th graders take Civics and Economics, and 11th graders take American History I in the fall and American History II in the spring.
*Note: Current Juniors and Seniors who have not taken US History/American History should choose one of the following option:
-American History I AND American History II
-AP US History (yearlong course) – Again, this course follows bullet #1.
World Languages: Students who are not planning to attend a 4-year public or private college/university do NOT have to take a foreign language to graduate. If a student is planning to attend a community college, enroll in the military, or seek a career after high school do not have to take Spanish to graduate with a high school diploma.
Electives: Rising 10th and 12th graders should be able to choose 4 electives. Rising 11th graders should choose 3 elective courses.
Alternates: All students should choose 3 Alternates. Please encourage students to think carefully about what they choose as an alternate because they may be placed in their alternate choice if something cannot be worked out for them to take their original choices. *If a student chooses an alternate and they are placed in this course on their final schedule, there will be NO SCHEDULE CHANGE!
