The United States Naval Academy is hosting two summer programs aimed at high performing math and science students. Current 8th through 10th graders are eligible to apply to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Program and current 11th graders are eligible to apply to the Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS). The online application for the Summer STEM will open on January 5, 2015 at http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/STEM and will close on April 15, 2015. The online application for Summer Seminar (NASS) will open January 15, 2015 at http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/NASS and will close on March 31, 2015.
The National AMVETS (American Veterans) is sponsoring the "Americanism Essay Contest" for students in grades 9-12. This year, the prompt for this contest is "What Does Freedom Look Like?" This is a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate their Americanism and Patriotism. It gives students a chance to use their skills and abilities through their essays. If interested, please stop by the counseling center for an entry form and rules for the contest. The deadline for submission of entries will be March 1st, 2015, and will have to be postmarked by this date to be considered. Winners of the contest could receive between $125 - $500 in the form of a VISA Gift Card.
Registration is now open for the 2015 FAFSA Day that will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2015. FAFSA Day is a FREE event offered to students and families who need financial aid resources for education beyond high school. The event will be held at Lenoir Community College and State Employee's Credit Union in Kinston from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. College financial aid officers and financial specialists will be available to help students and families complete the FAFSA form.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged at CFNC,org/FAFSAday or by calling 866-866-CFNC toll free. To be fully prepared to complete the FAFSA on February 28th, participants should either file their 2014 federal taxes in advance or bring the following items: both the student's and parents' federal 1040 tax forms for 2014 (or W-2 forms and other income and asset documents if completed tax forms are not available); the student's and one parent's Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) obtained in advance from the U.S. Department of Education website, www.pin.ed.gov; and a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet with as much information entered as possible. The online worksheet is available at www.fafsa.gov. Please make every effort to complete your FAFSA as soon as possible as federal funding is often on a "first come, first serve" basis. Keep in mind that for most colleges, students will need to have a completed FAFSA to also apply for scholarships. Any Junior or Senior who is interested in attending NC A&T or learning more about NC A&T is invited to attend Aggies Night on Tuesday, December 16th from 7 to 9pm at the Greenville Convention Center. GEAR UP is planning a Senior Trip to UNCW on Tuesday, January 20th from 10am to 4:30pm. Any senior who has applied to UNCW is welcomed to sign up for the trip.Super Seniors are also invited to attend. Parents are also invited and encouraged to attend this trip.If you have attended a GEAR UP trip in the past, you are not allowed to attend this trip. The deadline to sign up for this trip is Thursday, December 18th NO EXCEPTIONS! Each school will have 10 spots available.
